The least expensive of these are the optical rangefinders. It is sited on the flag and then using the calibrated gauge in the rangefinders optics you estimate the distance based on the flagstick's apparent height. A step up in price and performance are the type that estimate distance using a calibrated focus control. You sight the target in the rangefinder, bring it into focus, then read the distance mark on the focus control.
The next step up in both price and reliability are the laser rangefinders. They operate by sighting any target, then pressing a control to take a very precise yardage reading via a reflected laser.
The third, and clearly the most popular type rangefinders are based on GPS tracking technology. These, of course, are the most expensive but the cost is clearly offset by the extensive range of features and extreme accuracy.
